How the ... Take ownership of a file or folder in Windows. Sometimes in Windows, you will experience that you get an error message telling you that you do not have permission to make changes to certain files or folder because you do not have permission. A number of things can cause this, but the solution is to take ownership of said file or folder again. We will show you how to do that. The method is the same for singe files and for folders.

1. Click on 'Start' and click on 'File Explorer'.

2. In File Explorer, find the file or folder you want to take ownership of. We will use a folder called 'My Folder' in this tutorial.

3. Right click on the folder and click 'Properties'.

4. Go to the 'Security' tab, and then click on the Advanced button.

5. In the 'Advanced Security Settings' click on 'Change'.

6. In the 'Enter the object name to select' box write the username of your Windows account then click on 'Check Names' to make sure you've spelled it correctly. Then click OK.

7. If you want to take ownership of all subfolders of the folder you are working with make sure you tick 'Replace owner on subcontainers and objects', then click OK.

8. And press OK again.

9. Now we need to provide full access to the folder for your account. Right click on the folder again and click on 'Properties'.

10. Go to the 'Security' tab again and click on 'Advanced'.

11. Click on the 'Add' button.

12. In the 'Permission Entry' window click on 'Select a principal'.

13. Write the username of your Windows account in the 'Enter the object name to select' box, click 'Check names' and OK.

14. Tick the 'Full control' box and then OK.

15. Click OK again. You will now see your user account listed in the 'Group or user names' box.

16. Click OK one last time and you are done. You have now taken ownership of the folder and will have full control of the folder and its contents.
