This video features the top 10 Asian countries by population from 1950 to 2100.

The term “total population of a country” is defined as the total number of people residing in the country regardless of legal status or citizenship. The population count from this year onward is the corresponding figure as projected by the United Nations Population Division. The population values shown are midyear estimates.

The population of China has been the biggest in the world for a very long time. Today, China boast a population of more than 1.43 billion people, meaning that out of every 100 living humans on Earth, about 18 of them are now in China! (How crazy is that!).

However, this phenomenon won’t last much longer. In fact, given the rapid growth of population in India in recent decades, China is soon to be overtaken by India as the most populous country in Asia as well as the world. Along this line of thought, many international organizations as well as noted scholars have predicted that the India will take over the #1 spot as the most populated country in the world as early as 2027.

In addition to the India vs China comparison, we also witness the significant surge in the South East Asia population largely contributed by the tremendous rise in the population of Indonesia and the Philippines. In fact, Indonesia is expected to become the fourth most populous country in Asia by the end of the century with population of about 320 million.

In this video, we examine this theme from the perspective of growing population around the world, Asia in particular. While population growth attests to the success of human survival and expands economic capacity of a nation, uncontrolled and unsustainable population growth could potentially do more harm than good not only for the country itself, but the entire human species and the biosphere as well.

Note: Other topics of interest highlighted in this video include the history and projection of central Asian population, Western Asia population and also the marked fall in the population of Japan, which is projected to lose as much as 41% of its current population by 2100.
