In US news and current events today, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH NIVEA: Dr. Kwane Stewart travels up and down CA treating pets of people who are experiencing homelessness. Some of the common ailments he sees include allergies, ear infections, flea infestations, and arthritis.

Stewart says he has treated approx 400 animals since he started his mission in 201. When the 2008 Recession hit, Stewart was working in Modesto, CA. The town was hit especially hard. In February 2010, its unemployment rate reached 18.3%. Stewart said he saw a lot of families surrender pets to his practice because they couldn’t afford medical care during that time.

One day in 2011, he took his son to a soup kitchen where they set up a table and offered free checkups. He told reporters he soon had a long line of pet owners and it inspired him to hit the streets to find more animals in need. Up to 10% of the U.S. homeless population is thought to have a cat or dog. 151,000+ People are experiencing homelessness in CA on any given day.

Stewart sees the relationship between the pets & their owners firsthand. The veternarian says he usually pays for vaccines, medicine, or food out of pocket but sometimes the animals need more invasive procedures. He started a GoFundMe to raise money for surgeries, which, at time of publication, has raised more than $85k.

He and his brother also started a TV show called ‘The Street Vet,’ which documents his work & his travels. His aim is to challenge people’s misconceptions about homelessness as many people often question why pets should be allowed to live on the street.
