ROME, ITALY — A mosaic portrait of Pope Leo XIV was unveiled and illuminated on Sunday (January 25) at the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, continuing a centuries-old Vatican tradition following the election of a new pontiff.

The mosaic, created by the Vatican Mosaic Studio of the Fabric of Saint Peter, was installed alongside portraits of Pope Leo’s predecessors, next to the image of Pope Francis, about 13 metres above ground in the Basilica’s right nave.

Measuring 137 centimetres in diameter, the portrait was made with glass enamels and gold tesserae using traditional Vatican mosaic techniques. The design was based on an oil painting by Rodolfo Papa, created specifically for translation into mosaic. While the mosaic will remain in the Basilica, the original painting will be preserved in the Vatican.

The unveiling coincided with the Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul, marking the end of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (January 18–25). During Vespers, Pope Leo XIV emphasized unity, justice, and peace in his address.
