The festive mood of Durga Puja 2024 has come to an end with the immersion of Durga idol on October 13. With the beginning of Matri Paksha from Mahalaya, the atmosphere starts getting into the mood of the beginning of Durga Puja. This year, Mahashashthi of Durga Puja began on October 9. Like every year in West Bengal, this year too, people joined the celebrations from the early days of Tritiya. Though people participated in the Puja, the festive time witnessed mixed emotions of grief and devotion after the tragic rape-murder incident of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital on August 9, just 60 days before Durga Puja, and the subsequent protest in the form of hunger strike by junior doctors in West Bengal. Due to the deteriorating health of the doctors, people were seen praying before Goddess Maa Durga for their good health. More than 200 senior doctors of the state-run hospital resigned in support of the protest of junior doctors ahead of the Puja. On the other hand, like previous years, this year too the government had organized a carnival across the state on October 14 and 15.
