In general, consider bonsai trees to be both hardy and delicate. Keep them away from direct heat or draft, give them plenty of sunlight, and water them enough to keep their soil moist. Some indoor bonsai varieties might like some humidity.

There are hundreds of species of ficus trees that can be used for banyan bonsai. Ficus is an excellent choice for both bonsai beginners and experts. Ficus bonsais are said to tolerate lower light and humidity than others and can be comfortable in an indoor home environment. Locate your banyan bonsai near a sunny window and keep it away from drafts.

All bonsais need regular watering because they are grown in such small pots — their roots dry out quickly. Even if your banyan bonsai don't need water in the pot, it could appreciate a regular misting of the leaves. In fact, if you want to develop those unique aerial roots, the plant will need extremely high humidity. With so much regular watering, a containerized bonsai tree needs additional nutrients in the form of occasional fertilizer.

When pruning any ficus, be prepared for it to release a milky sap that contains latex. This can be irritating to some people's skin, so it is a good idea to wear gloves when handling ficus.

#Wiring_and_Pruning_Banyan_Bonsai

All bonsai are shaped by wiring and pruning. Use the thinnest wire that you can to hold the branch into the desired position. Wrap wire around your bonsai gently, and in the direction that the branch is bent; this will keep the wire from unwinding and prevent scarring. Apply wire starting at the trunk and continue on to the branch in question.

It takes about six weeks to train a branch into position so it can keep its shape without wires. When it is time to remove the wires, cut the wire carefully but do not unwind it, which can cause the branch to break.

Bonsai are intentionally kept in small, shallow pots, but even so, a bonsai needs to be replanted every so often. Repot your ficus bonsai every two years in the spring using a basic soil mix placed into a slightly larger pot than the one it was in,

#Repotting

You should repot your Ficus every two years in the spring using a basic soil mix. A good rule of thumb for repotting your Ficus is if you can remove the root/soil ball in one piece and it’s the same shape as the pot, it’s time. After repotting, water thoroughly and place Ficus in a shady location for several weeks so new roots can grow.

#Misting
Leaves want humidity to keep them green and healthy. Any time your tree is inside, the air is very dry. Mist often during the day. Avoid putting your Bonsai near a draft or vent, which dries out the foliage. A humidity tray is a great way to increase humidity. These shallow trays filled with small stones have water in the bottom of the tray. Make sure the water does not reach the bottom of the Bonsai pot. As the water evaporates, it creates a moister environment.

#Watering
Bonsai trees live in small pots and their world dries out much quicker than plants in the ground or in bigger pots, so close attention should be paid to watering. Check and water your bonsai every day. Striking a balance between not enough water and too much water can be a bit tricky but is very important. Water thoroughly and deeply when it needs water and let it catch its breath before watering again. An old bonsai watering trick is to place the entire pot in a sink of water an inch or two deep and let the water absorb from the holes in the bottom of the pot. Another favorite way to know if it needs watering is to lift it. You can get a sense of whether it needs watering by its weight.

An inexpensive moisture meter takes the guesswork out of watering. Water slowly so it absorbs into the dirt, otherwise, the water will run all over your table. Mist occasionally with a spray bottle too. It helps take the burden off of the roots especially when it’s very hot and dry out. We pot our bonsai trees specifically to drain well, so it’s almost impossible to overwater.
