The Basel tram (also called s Drämli in Basel German) is the most important local public transport system in the Swiss city of Basel. It has existed since 1895 and is now operated by the Basler Verkehrs-Betriebe (BVB). These emerged in 1946 from the predecessor company Basler Strassen-Bahnen (B.St.B.). The outer routes Basel-Aesch, Basel-Dornach, Basel-Pratteln and Basel-Rodersdorf, which are licensed as railways, are linked to the inner-city tram network, but the Baselland Transport AG (BLT) is responsible for their infrastructure. In some cases, BLT trams operate in the city area and BVB trams on the outer routes in the canton of Basel-Landschaft. Basel is one of the few tram networks in the world that operates cross-border routes in neighboring countries, in this case France and Germany.
