For the third weekend in a row, thousands of Iranians – young and old – braved freezing temperatures in Oslo (−15 °C) for hours to show their solidarity with, and support for, protesters, friends and family back in Iran. The demonstrators gathered outside Norway’s parliament, where speeches were given and songs performed, before they took to the streets chanting “Down with the mullahs!” and “Long live the Shah!”, waving old Iranian flags. Document News spoke with a number of the Oslo protesters, who conveyed a palpable urgency and unbreakable determination among Iranians abroad. With evident pride, they hailed the bravery of friends and family back home – people facing live ammunition, arbitrary detention, and systematic torture – yet their voices carried an undercurrent of dread and outrage. Several pointedly criticised the Norwegian press for its near-total reticence, offering only fleeting, lukewarm mentions of what they describe as outright massacres by the regime.
