18th century French Armoire Lyonnaise: Publication Quality Period Furniture

Описание к видео 18th century French Armoire Lyonnaise: Publication Quality Period Furniture

Presentation armoires produced during the 18th century in the city of Lyon have earned their place in French Furniture history as some of the grandest pieces ever created. The one featured in this video dates to circa 1730 ans is a particularly exemplary trace of this city and region’s unique and memorable furniture production.

One immediately recognizes the bold expression of the curvilinear and nature inspired rococo style, the rich reddish brown color of the mountain walnut typical of the region, the grand shell motif presiding of the doors for which these Lyonnaise armoires are famous. As we move inside the piece, we see that it has retained its original metal hardware from the period (especially the triangle key which is also particular to fine furniture from this region, interestingly signed by locksmith Pierre Calonier who lived from 1689-1754). Finally, it should be noted that this piece is intended to rest on its four bun feet six inches above the floor, but for the entertainment of walking inside, it is displayed to the public in the gallery on the floor.

Many thanks and happy hunting,
