Описание к видео Dip Top Gap Glacier above Jade Lake and below Pea Soup - Ronald, Washington, USA

Late season glacier travel often looks a lot different than early in the season and this was that in the extreme. Several people tried a couple different approaches, but as far as I know nobody made it. One couple tried to go up the side and had part of the glacier give way beneath them. No injuries but scary.

Jade to Dip Top Gap and Pea Soup: Getting around the lake is a nice trail with just a couple tree falls. There is a junction on the far side where you can go basically straight up to the left or straight down to the right. You want down. Up is a beautiful lookout that I checked out too, and I recommend. It is a nice path with basically dirt steps. The down path is sketchy and the most exposed of anything we did on this trip. There are a decent amount of solid rocks but everything else is loose dirt. Up wasn't bad, but down sucked. After that the walk through the boulders was easy and way better than it looks from across the lake. Super pretty too!

Once we reached the glacier things got dicey. We brought spikes, but instead of the snowfield we were expecting we got slick bare ice with huge crevasses. We were able to cross and get around the first section onto solid rock and go back around and between on of the crevasses. From there we could see deep under the glacier and see some light coming through from the top. It was a good reminder of why these are not as safe as they may sometimes look. The second section (often one big section, but not with the current melt), was steep with semi solid rock on the right and loose frequently falling rocks on the left, and ice up the middle. We watched a couple attempts on the middle and the right side, but no one made it more than halfway that we saw. At least one of them had mountaineering experience.
