I went to Ashwell Springs in the village of Ashwell, Herts, the other day. The springs represent one of the main sources of the River Cam (the Rhee tributary) and they churn up about 1 to 1.5 million gallons of water every day day at a cool 15 degrees or so Celcius. As a result of this constant cold temperature, the springs contain some rare flatworms ('Crenobia alpina' and 'Polycelis felina') which are solely limited to just such environments and regarded as relicts from Glacial (Ice Age) times. The worms in this video however, may, or may not be, C. alpina or P. felina though as there are 6 other similar species to be found in the springs. In addition to the flatworms, I filmed a little bit of footage of the common shrimps* that can also be found there... but unfortunately, I struggled a bit because the sun was strong on my camera's viewscreen (it has no eyepiece). *One of the curators of the local musuem there told me that there might also be another, rarer, species of shrimp in there as well, so that was interesting to learn! So: looks like I need to do a bit of research to find out exactly what I've filmed here! Cheers.
