The Olympics are upon us! It is time to watch the world's best athletes compete for medals and the prestige of being the best. But what if sea otters were allowed to compete against humans? Who would take home the gold? Well that would depend largely on the event! Dive in to see where sea otters would rank in some of the most popular Olympic games.

Surprisingly, sea otters would struggle in the swimming event. Even though they spend the vast majority of their lives in the ocean, they are not the fastest swimmer. In fact, they likely wouldn't qualify against Olympic swimmers. That is one reason sea otter's primarily feed on clams, mussels, and abalone. Sea otters don't have to be fast swimmers in order to catch them!

Speaking of clams, sea otters could EASILY win an eating competition. While not Olympic event, competitive eating IS popular in the summer. And sea otters LOVE eating. An otter's metabolism is so high, that they have to eat a quarter of their body weight every day!

While these fictional games are fun for us to think about, they're also fun for the sea otters. Otters love to play and wrestle. Also, sea otters LOVE ice so these gold medal ice treats were the perfect snack to keep them cool on a hot summer day. The ice has frozen bits of clams inside and are colored with a flavorless food coloring.

All the sea otters in this video were rescued when they were extremely young after being abandoned or separated from their moms. After their rehabilitation, federal agencies like the NOAA in the US or the Department of Fisheries Canada, deemed them non-releasable due to the fact that they lack the skills to survive in the wild.
