Washington DC's dance history, particularly Black dance history, began in the 1930s during a time of flourishing black businesses and artists. Bernie Hammond founded the Hammond School of Dance, which produced notable dancers like Sandra Fortune, who became one of the first African American ballerinas in the 1970s. Johnson Haywood created the Capital Ballet, DC's first interracial ballet company, which later had the first black soloist at ABT as its artistic director. Dissonance Dance Theater continues this legacy and is currently in its seventeenth season. Other professional companies in the area include Washington Ballet, Step Africa, and Black Leaves, with some emerging choreographers making their debuts. However, there is a lack of focus on professional ballet companies in the area, with more emphasis on hip hop, commercial dance, and modern dance.
