Some of the most progressive scratches ever to have been performed on wax came from the fingertips of Johnny Rosado. Better known as Johnny Juice. His scratch catalogue, specifically for Public Enemy, changed the entire venue of scratching. Juice’s approach to songs like “Terminator X to the Edge of Panic“, “Night of the Living Baseheads” and “Rebel Without A Pause” redefined the way DJs recorded their scratches. But of all Johnny’s work, the scratch remix of “You’re Gonna Get Yours” made the heaviest impact on me. Only because when you listen to it, none of it sounds pre-rehearsed or planned. It’s as if the engineer pressed play on the sound console and Juice randomly began cuttin’ up his favorite parts of the vocal version of “You’re Gonna Get Yours”. What I mean to say is, his scratches sound purely instinctual and that to me is the essence of creativity.

So it should come as no surprise when I tell you I have been following Juice’s career since the late 80s. I seen him perform live with the Kings Of Pressure at Irving Plaza (NYC) during the 1989 New Music Seminar and would tune in to his college radio show with Jeff Foss (the first DJ Battle I ever heard was an audio excerpt Juice played of Cash Money winning the 1988 DMC on their show) every Saturday night.

Thankfully, the Universe made it so Juice and I would eventually cross paths. Almost 30 years later, he and I sit before my #DJSkillsAndStyles student, equipping them with all we know about the art form of DJing so they can advance it further.
