Areopagitica is the first and arguably most important defence of free speech, which John Milton defends precisely because he believes in the power of truth: “Let her and Falsehood grapple; who ever knew Truth put to the worse in a free and open encounter? Her confuting is the best and surest suppressing.”

It did not persuade Milton's audience. His influence, however, has outlasted them.
