Within the framework of 25 quick-fire questions, this is a celebrity interview with the British television, film, and theatre Actress Georgina Hale, where she talks candidly about her life, career, and love of travelling.
Georgina Agnes Hole was born in Ilford, Essex on 4th of August 1943, and died on 4th January 2024 (aged 80).
In this interview Georgina Hale recalls initially training as a hairdresser before going to RADA and then starting her professional acting career in the theatre doing weekly Rep.
Georgina Hale enjoyed a long association with the flamboyant and controversial Film Director Ken Russell and appeared in a number of his films including ‘The Devils’ (1971); ‘The Boy Friend’ (1971); ‘Lisztomania’ (1975); ‘Valentino’ (1977); ‘Treasure Island’ (1995); and won a BAFTA Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer for playing the role of ‘Alma Mahler’ opposite Robert Powell in ‘Mahler’ (1974).
Georgina Hale’s other film roles include ‘Eagle in a Cage’ (1972); ‘Butley’ (1974); ‘Voyage of the Damned’ (1976); ‘Sweeney 2’ (1976); ‘The World Is Full of Married Men’ (1979); ‘The Watcher in the Woods’ (1980); ‘Castaway’ (1986); and ‘Beyond Bedlam’ (1994).
Georgina Hale fondly remembers in this interview that her most favourite theatrical role, was playing 'Josie', in the original London production of ‘Steaming’, where she received a Laurence Olivier Theatre Award nomination for her performance. However, Georgina Hale acknowledges that she is mainly remembered for two roles. Firstly, on television as ‘Jean’, opposite Adam Faith in ‘Budgie’ (1971-1972), and for her film role playing ‘Kate’ opposite Roger Daltrey in ‘McVicar’ (1980).
Georgina Hale has appeared on television throughout her career, with her most notable roles as ‘Daisy K’ in ‘Doctor Who: The Happiness Patrol - Parts 1 to 3’ (1988), opposite Sylvester McCoy and Sophie Aldred; as ‘Ruth Ellis’ in ‘Ladykillers: Lucky, Lucky Thirteen!’ (1980); as ‘Lynne’ in ‘Gems’ (1988); and in 40+ episodes in the eponymous role of ‘T.Bag’, the villainous, tea-drinking sorceress in ‘T.Bag’ made by Thames Television.
In this interview, Georgina Hale also talks outside her acting career, and of her love of travelling, and states that her three most favourite Countries to visit were Egypt, Bulgaria, and the Seychelles. She also describes how on a visit to Bulgaria, she met and fell in love with Bulgarian Actor Milen Penev, only for another woman to step in between them both, before he died of mysterious circumstances in 1991. This relationship, she candidly describes as the biggest heartache she ever had.
“I don't look at my life, as a career. It was a job, I was lucky to do, and I loved doing it. There were some bad jobs, that at the end, you couldn't wait for it to finish, but that's life! You can't always work with people you get on with, and you like. It's impossible. So, it wasn't a career, it was a job, that I was lucky enough to be doing” - Georgina Hale
