The Book of Esther records the historical account of Persian King Ahasuerus (Xerxes I) during the 5th century BC. The king had been persuaded by Haman to kill every Jewish person in his province, which stretched from India to Egypt! When the king chose Mordecai’s niece Esther to become his Queen, the decree to destroy the Hebrews was discovered. Mordechai explains to Esther that deliverance for the Jewish people would come, but ‘who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this.’ Esther 4:4. Esther risked her life to save her people, and this historical event is celebrated by the Jewish people with the yearly Feast of Purim. The British Museum has bowls from the Persian palace where Esther lived as Queen. The museum also has a beautiful video of the reconstruction of the palace complex in Iran, which I hope will enhance your enjoyment of the Book of Esther. I have included photos of Queen Esther and her uncle Mordechai’s shrine situated in Hamadan, Iran. Archaeology continues to prove the accuracy of the biblical historical narrative!
