In this video, these F-35A Lightings at RAF Lakenheath are practising the High Key Low Approach procedure, a procedure used if you have a flameout. This is called a PFO (Practice Flame Out) or SFO (Simulated Flame Out).
Engine problems are a pilots worst nightmare, especially if you have a single engine. One situation that can happen is a 'Flame Out' which is not an engine failure as such, but the loss of fuel combustion. This means the revs are still going, the engine is still running but no fuel is burning. An engine needs air and fuel to combust, with no fuel burning but the revs still running, the next procedure is called a High Key.
To simulate the flame out and to be in High Key, the F-35 will be at an altitude anywhere between 7,000-10,000ft and to have the engine at idle. This is why when the F-35A is half way across the runway, you can hear the loud engine bang. The F-35 is basically turned into a glider, with enough air scooped and the pilot carefully controlling the revs, they will be able to attempt to restart the engine in the real world.
Aircraft are always in constant battle, from corrosion, bird strikes and traffic. However, all aircraft have one enemy in common; Gravity. The engine of the aircraft can fight gravity and the wings keep the aircraft flying but when you take the engine out of the equation, gravity is pretty much the winner.
When your engine fails, you really are potentially going to drop out of the sky. The F-35s in this video demonstrates the procedure should an engine flameout occur.
This procedure is used to plan a forced approach in the event of an engine failure or flameout. In the event of an flame out emergency, the goal is the extend the glide as far possible, the longer the pilot can glide, the more time they have to evaluate their landing options and plan an approach.
The pilots of these Lockheed Martin F-35A's based at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk are part of the 48th Fighter Wing. The pilots have requested the High Key / low approach and just watch how the F-35A falls out of the sky, literally. The altitudes for the High Key are between 7,000-10,000 feet or lower altitudes using a 'Low Key'.
RAF Lakenheath is the home of the 48th Fighter Wing and home to four combat ready fighter squadrons; 492nd FS, 493rd FS, 494th FS and the recently reactivated 'Valkyries', the 495th Fighter Squadron. It may carry the title RAF but it is a USAF base. This is because the base was original built for and operated by the Royal Air Force in 1940 and was home to 20 OTU with Wellington Bombers, 149 Squadron with their Short Sterling Bombers who were also joined later by 199 Squadron. After WWII, and from 1948, it then became home to the USAF's 307th Bombardment Group and also the 2d Bombardment Group. It wasn't until 15th January 1960 that the 48th Tactical Fighter Wing made Lakenehath their new home. After a few more years the 'Tactical' title was dropped and became 48th Fighter Wing. This included the 'Tactical' title being dropped on the squadrons too.
