Festool Guide Rail Setup : Tips & Tricks

I decided to do a quick video showing you how I setup my Festool guide rails when I can’t utilize the zero clearance strip because of the width of the piece I want to cut. Nothing too exciting and I doubt this will go viral so please enjoy. Let me know if you have any questions. Have a good one!

For this quick tips and tricks video I’d like to show you how I set up my guide rails when I have to take into account the kerf of the blade on my track saw.

Say I want to cut a 4” strip off this sheet of plywood. I’ll mark 4” in but as you can see my guide rail isn’t fully supported and that’s no good.

So if that happens I’ll grab one of my kreg multi marks and set it to 4 and a 16th of an inch. I’ll lock that in and then grab another one and set it up to be identical to the first one by doing what you see here. This isn’t rocket science but this setup works really well for me.

With the multi marks clamped down at both ends of my substrate…I’ll move my guide rail until it bumps up against the blade of the ruler and that’s pretty much it. With the clamps and multi-marks removed, and the guide rail clamped down, I can make my cut and be confident that my piece will end up being 4” wide.

You can see here that I’m pretty much on the 4” line according to my small combination square but if you want to get technical we can bust out the calipers…Now it may not be bang on 4” but it’s close enough for me and on that note I’m going to call this video done.
