The Story of Dhamra Port

The work on Dharma Port kicked off with a scoping mission undertaken by IUCN which found that the environment issues facing the port were not unique, and that there were a number of examples around the world where similar problems had been effectively addressed.

IUCN and DPCL worked to raise awareness among local communities of issues related to turtle conservation. The use of Turtle Excluder Devices(TEDs) has been promoted to prevent the inadvertent capture of turtles in fishing nets, and a schools programme has educated local students to turtle conservation.

The engagement has resulted in higher environmental and ecological standards being applied to the management of Dhamra Port, and a positive outcome for the turtles.
