STORYLINE:
Iraqi intelligence chief Hamid al-Shatri met on Thursday in Damascus with Ahmad al-Sharaa, leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or HTS, the Syrian insurgent group that overthrew ousted president Bashar Assad on December 8.

Al-Shatri is due to meet with other officials from the interim Syrian authorities.

According to Iraqi media, the Iraqi intelligence chief held discussions about the security status at the borders between Iraq and Syria.

Al-Shatri is the first Iraqi official to meet with new authorities after the fall of Assad’s government.
