Thoughts:
Not as nice looking as some of the oldest Realforce, but I prefer it over the R2 sort of look. It feels reasonably solid as with most Realforce, albeit a bit creaky. Rattles like crazy because of the extra travel the sliders have with these big caps. I actually like using it flat more with HiPro, the feet out doesn't feel or sound as nice to me. Obs the caps are what you're here for, very aggressively sculpted and angled, very hi, very fun. Not sure if I really find them all that comfortable, but they are fun. Too much scoop actually, you get forced into hitting each key right in the middle, and that just isn't great for comfort and speed.
Ignoring HiPro for a sec, the board is alright and not great but not terrible in terms of spring crunch and dome age/feeling, there is an interesting difference between the break in of the alphas vs the numpad (that I never used), the domes actually feel a bit more smooth and the sound is cleaner and less muted, although feels lighter and snappy than the more well used alphas which is a bit more jarring in practice (interesting apples to apples example of broken in vs non broken in topre though). It's otherwise a bog standard uninteresting topre board, only notable thing I can think about it is that there's lesser spring crunch out of the box than some other of my realforce.
No longer ignoring the only reason you'd want this board, HiPro just aren't really my thing for daily topre to be honest. They're very interesting, can can be pretty fun, but they absolutely aren't as usable in terms of typing comfort, speed, feel/performance, and sound. They're less wobbly than you'd think with good housings, which I would've attributed to the specific HiPro housings and sliders, but in actuality it's the same when swapped onto a normal Realforce which begs the question why they're even there, as they just make the board feel and sound worse. Maybe just to prevent someone snapping them off with enough force, but the board would feel and sound better without them offering a cleaner less rattly sound, and less scratchiness and physical contact (I'll show that off in another video at a later date). They have more free pre travel than most topre leading to a lot of rattling but also being fairly poppy, although it's to the point where they just feel a bit more loose rather than giving extra crispness like on a hhkb or normal realforce caps. It also makes bottoming out feel more aggressive and binary, wonder if that's just due to the mass of the caps or the extended slider design (likely both). This is more an acquired taste, just like SA is (which I would say is not too far off although I prefer the profile more as a whole), that feels like it's more form than function, but I can see it hitting for the right sort of build and desired experience. For me though, it more just sits around lol.
My unit might be a bit more rattly than some others, since it's more well used, and I have mounted the caps on some other boards to test as well, so that's likely increased the amount of rattle for the board overall compared to something more like new.
Build:
Realforce 104UG HiPro - Black
Steel Tray Mount
45g Topre
HiPro caps
Equipment:
Josephson C716 → Crane Song Flamingo.1 → Prism Lyra 2 / Neumann U87i (Thiersch Reskin) → Flamingo → Lyra / Nikon D5500
C716 head level, from seating position, on axis centered alphas, cardioid pattern, decoupled. U87i head level, directly above board, on axis, cardioid, partially coupled.
Max -1db peak (excluding camera), no further processing.
C716 is accurate and honest to typing in person to my ear, extremely sensitive though. U87i is also honest but slight sweetness and grandness with slight grit, reskin and mods add some clarity and slight treble boost at cost of smoothness, direct overhead for different perspective and how most people record their boards. Crappy cam mic cause why not.
Bad IKEA slab into acoustic membrane on concrete (slightly hollow and thinner sounding, weighted down with heavy equipment, isolated from floor)
Aiglatson Studio Synchronize Jacquard (thicker and slightly stiffer, partially isolates from desk)
