Coast Guard response crews recovered more than 450,000 gallons of oil from the Coimbra shipwreck during oil recovery operations 30 miles offshore of Shinnecock. N.Y. A unified command of US Coast Guard and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation began recovery operations on May 11, 2019 after discovering a significant amount of oil trapped in the Coimbra wreck. The Coimbra was a British supply ship carrying oil to Nova Scotia when is was torpedoed by German U-Boat 123 in January, 1942. US Coast Guard video by Resolve Marine.
