After a recently divorced grandmother moves in with her parents, she is recruited to play tennis for a community college and must navigate the challenges of being a 55-year-old freshman student athlete.

SYNOPSIS
Lina is a 55- year-old recently divorced grandmother. She’s back home in Kumquat Cove, California, “where farmers take their citrus seriously,” living in her childhood bedroom above her parents’ bakery.

The pilot begins as Lina arrives on the campus of Kumquat Cove Community College on her way to play tennis with her high school friend who is now coach of the women’s tennis team. Nestled among citrus groves near the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the college is the “proud home of the Quats” and an ambitious athletic director.

When the hot shot recruit for the ladies tennis team is humiliated by Lina and the scrappy play of the other recruits, she quits. The coach, under the gun to field a successful team and replace the hot shot, realizes Lina is the solution to her problem. Lina’s a good tennis player and still has eligibility to play college tennis. Yes, a 55-year-old grandmother can play college tennis because there is no upper age limit for community college athletes.

Lina’s opportunity to be a Quat is actually her second chance to play college tennis. In high school she’d received a scholarship to play for Kumquat Cove College, but an unplanned pregnancy derailed her college dreams. Now 37 years later Lina can revisit that missed opportunity, but she thinks she’s too old. After dreaming of being 19-year-old Lina and winning the championship for the team, she decides to take this second chance and agrees to play for the coach. What Lina didn’t count on is that as a scholarshipped student athlete, she must take a full load of classes, go to daily practices and travel for the team. She wasn’t planning on working that hard.

Across the series Lina reluctantly dives into the travails of being an older student athlete: managing the physical demands of high level tennis while being middle-aged; wearing a uniform made for young women not grandmothers; connecting with her much younger teammates; being underestimated and insulted by opposing coaches, players and their families; having professors younger and less experienced in life than she is; going on a blind date with a man who turns out to be an adjunct professor teaching her class; dealing with one trainer who doesn’t think she belongs and another who opens her eyes to the world of senior athletes and a possible career.

Lina’s struggles as a collegiate student athlete and as a divorced middle-aged woman drive the series as she figures out who she is and what she wants her future to be.
