Day 5, Espanola - Ghost Ranch

Back to the road and Ghost Ranch. Finalizing some work in the AM, we left around 10am and began the quick drive to Ghost Ranch. Beautiful twisting roads we got there quickly and checked into a campsite. No cell signal, and spotty wifi, we instead busied ourselves with exploring again what we could. Sadly we couldn’t hike into the canyon we had gotten lost in back in 2018, due to the Forest being closed, so instead tooled around the property.

We went to the museums, library, and zen garden, reading the history throughout.

It’s amazing what you see on a thru-hike, but just as much what you don’t see. When thru hiking you are consistently moving so seeing much, but don’t usually have the time or even energy to explore in depth these amazing places you pass through. It was cool to have this time, to remember, learn, and feel the area in a new but old way.

Wandering back to our campsite after some exploration, we set up our camp chairs, yes camp chairs... which we still are very much conflicted on these off trail spoiled gluteus Maximus of ours. Taking a moment to set up we chatted, read a book we found in the library called “Homo Deus” the follow up to “Sapiens.” Filled with heavy content and deep philosophical and thought provoking theories we got lost within our own thoughts for a while. Soon it was dinner time.

Cooking dinner at the campsite was a difficulty as the wind ripped through causing the flame from our stove to barely lick the pan on top. Cold “melts” were consumed, still very yummy, but definitely less melt than we would have preferred.

Another conflicted day. Happy to be able to revisit a place we had travelled through on foot years ago, but also sad as we felt the weight of the fires stretch even this far north, and bring us crashing into the reality of the magnitude of these beautiful forests burning around us.
