Hi Everybody, MrEnergyCzar here. This video is about explaining what MPGe or miles per gallon equivalent is.

• I don't like the rating because it confuses people. The rating tells consumers how far an alternative energy fueled vehicle can travel. They're basing this rating on the equivalent energy that a gallon of gas contains.

• A gallon of gas has the same energy as 33.7 KWH of electricity does. If driving in electric mode and you get about the typical 3 miles per KWH you'll see a rating of about 100 MPGe. I don't think that's very helpful.

• For Plug-in Hybrids, most people want to know how much gas they would use for their typical commute. The problem is that plug-in hybrids have different initial electric only ranges. If a plug-in hybrid goes 20 electric miles before the engine comes on, and your commute is 50 miles, the MPGe rating doesn't really help you.

• I think the rating sticker should show how much gas you would use based on 25,50 or a 100 mile commute. This assumes that the car is initially fully charged. This way you'll easily be able to choose the plug-in hybrid that's right for you based on your typical commute.

• Even in a pure electric car, people car about the total electric range, not the MPGe. For pure electric cars, a better rating would be total electric miles per dollar based on typical electricity costs. Tell me your thoughts on MPGe and thanks for watching.
