A U.S. Navy EA-18G Growler fighter jet crashed into San Diego Bay near Shelter Island on February 12, 2025. The aircraft, assigned to Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 135 from NAS Whidbey Island, Washington, went down during a flight operation. Fortunately, both service members on board ejected safely and were rescued by a nearby fishing boat before being transported to UC San Diego Medical Center.

According to reports, a charter fishing boat with H & M Landing was the first to respond, with crew members quickly pulling the pilots from the water. The U.S. Navy has confirmed that the aviators are in stable condition and are under medical observation for 24 hours as a precaution.

Eyewitnesses, including a Point Loma couple, captured the moment the aircraft nose-dived into the bay. The loud sound of the jet's descent shook homes, and local authorities have warned the public not to approach or collect any aircraft debris that may wash ashore.

The Navy has launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, with Naval Base Coronado establishing an emergency operations center. Officials have also located the underwater crash site and are working to minimize environmental damage caused by the wreckage.

Retired military pilots have weighed in on possible causes, suggesting the aircraft may have been in a turn or was intentionally directed toward the bay to avoid damage to structures. While the exact reason remains unknown, officials assure that further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
