The center of the highest or lowest air pressure in your region is marked on the analysis or forecast chart with an “H” for high or “L” for low. A broad area of high pressure, or a high-pressure ridge, is often associated with fair weather due to the downward vertical motion, which causes warming and drying of the airmass. In contrast, a low-pressure trough features a general rising air motion, promoting the growth of clouds and unsettled weather. We can determine the wind direction from these pressure areas.
 
Wind circulates around high-pressure centers in a clockwise direction, also referred to as anti-cyclonic. Low pressure centers rotate in a cyclonic, or counterclockwise direction (think “Left" for "L"). This movement of air is wind, and it doesn’t blow in a straight line from high to low for a number of reasons. One of these being the rotation of the Earth. This is due to the Coriolis Force, which deflects the wind to the right in the Northern Hemisphere.
