On November 2, 2015, the city of Chicago was shaken by the tragic murder of 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee. Living in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood, Tyshawn was an innocent child caught in the brutal crossfire of gang violence. His father, Pierre Stokes, had ties to the Gangster Disciples, a gang embroiled in a deadly feud with the rival Black P Stones.
That fateful day, after school, Tyshawn went to play basketball at a local park, a simple pleasure in his otherwise challenging environment. Dwright Boone-Doty, a member of the Black P Stones, known ominously as 'Murder,' lured Tyshawn into an alley under the pretense of playing basketball and I'm offering him a juice box. There, in cold blood, Boone-Doty executed the young boy, shooting him multiple times at close range as an act of retaliation against Tyshawn's father’s gang.
The discovery of Tyshawn’s body sent shockwaves through the community and beyond. His mother, Karla Lee, was inconsolable, her grief manifesting in tearful public pleas for justice. The community rallied around the Lee family, holding vigils and demanding action against the senseless violence that claimed the life of an innocent child.
Chicago Police launched a thorough investigation, piecing together evidence and following leads. The breakthrough came with the identification of Boone-Doty and Corey Morgan, another member of the Black P Stones with a personal vendetta. Morgan's brother had been killed earlier that year, fueling his desire for revenge against the Gangster Disciples.
By November 2016, both Boone-Doty and Morgan were arrested. Boone-Doty, already in custody for an unrelated crime, faced charges of first-degree murder, while Morgan was charged as a co-conspirator, accused of planning the murder and providing the gun. Their arrests brought a semblance of relief to a grieving community, highlighting the urgent need to address gang violence.
The trials of Boone-Doty and Morgan garnered significant public attention. In October 2019, Boone-Doty was found guilty of first-degree murder, with overwhelming evidence against him, including witness testimonies and forensic proof. Morgan's trial followed, resulting in his conviction as well. Both men were sentenced to long prison terms, providing some measure of justice for Tyshawn’s family and community.
Tyshawn Lee’s murder served as a grim reminder of the extreme lengths gang violence could reach, prompting calls for more effective measures to combat such senseless acts. In the years following his death, efforts to tackle gang violence at its roots have intensified, from community outreach programs to increased police presence in high-risk areas.
Tyshawn’s story, though heartbreaking, is a powerful motivator for continued action to create safer communities. His memory inspires a commitment to protect innocent lives and strive for a future where no child has to endure such a tragic fate.
