From the floors to the air, safety precautions can be found throughout the Gulf Coast Medical Center. “We’re in a construction project here to make sure that the work and the disruption to the building we are doing don’t affect our patients,” said Lewis Johnson, an industrial hygienist with Lee Health.

As the Gulf Coast Medical Center expands to care for more patients, it continues to care for current patients. “If you’re welding, there’s smoke and exhaust from the welding that we don’t want coming into our hospital. If you’re painting, there are smells from the paint, the oil-based paint coming through and we don’t want those smells coming through,” said Johnson.

So special equipment is brought in to filter the air away from patient care. “That’s a HEPA-filtered vacuum, and that would be used if workers need to clean themselves off or if we were to get some dirt or debris trekked outside, we would use HEPA-filtered vacuums to clean up rather than regular vacuums because we want to keep those very small particles that could be infectious,” he said.

And to make sure patients don’t feel like they are in a construction zone, workers use quieter tools. “There are some tools that would be faster, cheaper, but they are very loud. We have them buy equipment that is intentionally less loud,” said Johnson.

With temporary walls, doors, tape, and air filters, Lee Health uses multiple barriers to ensure patients are not affected by the construction. “We can’t do renovations without opening ceilings, opening walls, and at times cutting into the ground, and it’s likely that we have potentially pathogenic organisms in these spaces, so we are controlling their migration out, not just from the air when the doors open up but also you may have heard the tacky mat as the workers walk off to carry the dirt off of them, so they don’t trek it through our hallways,” he said.
