For most of human history, humans have enjoyed symbiotic and peaceful relationships with fellow animals. Only in recent millennia have humans begun to objectify and exploit nonhuman species. In Iron Age Britain, the era that many modern witches romanticize as “authentic” Western culture, this period of transition meant that most people ate very little animal products on a daily basis, but big feasting events, such as the solstice, would often entail mass slaughter of fellow animals, especially pigs. Many of the stone henges that remain today are sites of extreme violence.

Vegan witchcraft acknowledges and sits with this sad history and invites a reclaiming of a plant-based human food system and more peaceable relations with fellow animals that characterized most of humanity's history prior to just a few thousand years ago when hunting and farming were introduced.
Vegan witchcraft also invites us to take a cue from nature and honor the growing shadows, fading light, and cooler temperatures by resting, recuperating, hibernating, and incubating before the seasons of high sun energy return. Solstice can be celebrated without animal sacrifice, as witches remain faithful to the turning of the season and seek warmth and comfort with friends, family, and fellow animals until the sun's return.
