Bonsaify | Big Beautiful Bonsai - White Pine Fall Cleanup and Styling

Описание к видео Bonsaify | Big Beautiful Bonsai - White Pine Fall Cleanup and Styling

Join Eric for a problem-solving exercise and some fun work on this big, beautiful White Pine bonsai tree! This tree is a Japanese White Pine imported from Japan many years ago that was grafted onto Japanese Black Pine roots.

0:46 Eric has owned this tree for only one growing season, and because the growth is not as even or robust as he would like, he is examining the tree to figure out the cause of symptoms that include browning needles, very short new needles, and and some branches with die-back. There are more needles falling off than he would expect, even at this time of year.

1:32 The first step is to examine the soil condition. Eric takes off about 1" of the soil and sees that it's pretty healthy. There are a few weeds, and good root density. He will replace the soil he removed so there will be good moisture penetration.

2:39 Eric has been keeping the soil relatively dry, which he believes can be the reason for shorter needles. The browning appears to be caused by natural sunburn.

3:03 The next step is to look for signs of root aphids, because Japanese Black Pine are susceptible and this tree was grated onto JBP. Eric will treat the tree with an insecticide like pyrethrin or a soap dunk.

3:48 Eric explains why he plans to do some work to reduce the crown, and the look he wants to achieve.

6:24 After hours of work, the crown shape is where Eric wants it, more triangular.
