This piece is characterized by its quiet and reflective nature, delving into the exploration of inner peace stemming from an acceptance of impermanence. Impermanence, a spiritual concept rooted in Buddhism, is a universal aspect of human existence from which nothing is exempt. Embracing this reality allows us to attain harmony with the world around us. Both the verses from the Diamond Sutra and the vivid imagery in Gordon’s poem illustrate this concept. "The Fleeting World" is movement III from "Songs of Enlightenment."

Gordon, a poet from the Northwest, was my frequent collaborator on numerous musical projects, including the three-movement works “Echoes from the Heart” and “Awakening,” as well as “Weathered Days” and others. Gordon passed away a few weeks before the premiere of The Fleeting World in 2005, and this is the recording from that premiere.
