Goddess Kali was born at a time when Goddess Durga was fighting a demon named Raktabeej. Raktabeej had a special power — every drop of his blood that touched the ground would give birth to a new demon. To overcome this problem, Goddess Durga took the fierce form of Kali. With her enormous tongue, she drank all of Raktabeej’s blood and thus destroyed him. But even after the battle ended, her rage did not subside. Her form became so terrifying that the entire world began to tremble. Then Goddess Kali began performing the Tandava — the dance of destruction. No one was able to calm her fury. At that moment, Lord Shiva — who is Goddess Kali’s consort and the god of balance — thought of a unique way to stop her. He went to the battlefield and lay down at the spot where Kali was dancing. Blinded by anger, Kali did not realize that she had stepped on Shiva’s chest. But when she looked down and saw that it was Lord Shiva beneath her feet, her rage immediately calmed. Filled with shock and remorse, her tongue protruded — which is believed to symbolize astonishment and repentance. This event represents not only the manifestation of anger but also the balance between Shakti (power) and Shanti (peace). By offering his own body, Lord Shiva restored Goddess Kali to her true divine form.
