On today’s IRS tax refund update we are going to take a look at the latest developments this tax season including the backlog of unprocessed tax returns and amended returns which has started to increase over the last week, which in turn is going to start to lead to even more refund delays. Meanwhile there are still those who are waiting on last year’s tax refunds so we will recap that, and those IRS notices and refund delay causes being experienced by our viewers and possibly ways for assistance.
In the last week we have heard many viewers report in they are receiving one of several different types of 60-day notices from the IRS. This by far seems to be the most common IRS notice being sent out lately, and many impacted taxpayers can expect to receive multiple of these in the mail before there tax return is finally processed, and refund is issued. The main reason we are seeing this notice being sent out has to do with the IRS needing to verify the income you entered on your tax return. In many cases the IRS has still not processed the tax return of your employer or former employer which is needed so the IRS can cross reference the income you entered on your tax return vs what they reported. However, one way to speed this process along we have seen is to contact the IRS to confirm this in fact the cause of the delay, from there in multiple cases the IRS requested the taxpayer submit a copy of the W-2 they received from their employer, which in turn they used to continue processing that tax return. So, this is 1 step you may want to do if impacted by this. However, in some cases we have seen the IRS send out IRS notice CP05 or CP05A which details the IRS needs more information pertaining to your income to continue processing your tax return. This is specifically sent out to those who’s income entered does not match what the IRS received from a taxpayer’s employer. So, the IRS will request you submit copies of W-2’s and paystubs to support what you entered on your tax return as it could be an error with your employer’s tax return instead.
