Notes on the Zion Pops Choir

The Zion Pops Choir is a magical group that forms just once a year as part of our Zion Chamber Orchestra Festival. The group is composed of talented singers that love popular music and are up to the challenge of producing an enjoyable concert in under a week of rehearsals. The people in it are talented folks with beautiful voices. We work hard and laugh a lot during rehearsals. Tom Coyan, our pianist, is a musician’s musician. Not only is he an excellent classical pianist, he accompanies in any style you need and is a master of improvisation.

Tonight we celebrate classic musicals. I love them!!!!!! When I was young, I kept seeing the movie Oliver in the theater. Enchanted! Guys and Dolls was the first musical I ever conducted! I was 25 and the great Al Muller let me hire a professional orchestra and coach the voices. Comic genius Shelly Berman was our Nathan Detroit. We performed in Atherton Auditorium! Oklahoma is a kick with beautiful music and a ballet. Tunestruck, Al Wolter, Dawn and Tom Coyan and myself were all involved in The Music Man at Delta over a decade ago. Timeless!

Great soloists tonight! Each brings their own personality to their song!

Thank you George Buckbee and my friend Pete Ottesen for giving myself and all the wonderful choral and instrumental musicians a place to make magic!

The local music community mourns the loss of U.O.P. band Director Dr. Eric Hammer. Eric was loved by his students, a wonderful musician and extremely charismatic! His music lives in his students! Onward.
