In a major step toward improving urban mobility in Rawalpindi, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif inaugurated two large-scale infrastructure projects worth Rs 8.77 billion. The initiatives — Nawaz Sharif Flyover on Adiala Road and the GPO Chowk Underpass on Mall Road — aim to alleviate chronic traffic congestion in the city and are being hailed as game-changers for local commuters.

Addressing the public during the inauguration, Maryam Nawaz emphasized that these projects have been completed in record time with top-tier construction standards. As she arrived at the venue, she was warmly welcomed by citizens showering rose petals, and she acknowledged the crowd with waving hands and responses to slogans.

Briefings were provided by Punjab Minister for Communication and Works Malik Sohaib Bharath and Secretary Sohail Ashraf, who detailed the scale of development underway in Rawalpindi. The city is currently undergoing work on 67 road projects covering a total of 607 kilometers, of which 51 have already been completed.

The Nawaz Sharif Flyover, beginning at Kachehri Chowk on Adiala Road, connects to GT Road, Rawalpindi Ring Road, and Chakri Interchange on the motorway. It is expected to benefit more than 300,000 vehicles daily. Additionally, this flyover will significantly cut travel time by over an hour and reduce fuel costs for thousands of commuters.

The surrounding areas — including Gorakhpur, Adiala, Khalsa Khurd, Khalsa Kalan, Dhallan, Jarrar Camp, Dhok Awan, and Singral — will all benefit from improved traffic flow. A two-kilometer-long service road has also been constructed alongside the flyover for enhanced accessibility.

Meanwhile, the GPO Chowk Underpass project on Mall Road, spanning nearly two kilometers, is designed to handle more than 200,000 vehicles daily. It also features the city’s first intelligent traffic signal system. The underpass will facilitate smooth access from Kashmir Road to National Highway (N-5), easing commutes to major destinations such as CMH, MH, and AFIC hospitals.

The project also includes pedestrian-friendly infrastructure near AFIC, aiming to improve safety and accessibility. Commuters heading toward Saddar Bazaar, Railway Station, and adjacent localities will experience reduced congestion due to the underpass.

Maryam Nawaz reaffirmed her government's commitment to prioritizing development projects for public convenience. She announced further plans to remodel Kachehri Road and Mall Road and praised the coordinated efforts of all institutions involved in these transformative urban projects.

“These flyovers and underpasses are not just infrastructure developments — they are a historic shift toward a more connected and commuter-friendly Rawalpindi,” she stated.
