VAMPIRE SURVIVORS, THE PC GAME
Vampire Survivors is a run-based roguelite action time survival game. It features basic retro-style pixel graphics, a simple yet fun and rewarding minimalistic gameplay and some roguelike elements. Vampire Survivors sports many well working game functions and mechanics and especially shines with its many creative and absurd ideas for characters, weapons and monsters.

In Vampire Survivors players can chose between a huge number of characters with unique very creative weapons to dispatch ever increasing waves of monsters. These monsters walk towards the player. Once they touch the player's character hit points are lost. Very few monsters also have special attacks. Nearly all content of the game has to be unlocked either by spending earned gold coins or finding hidden secrets.

Vampire Survivors received the award for „Best Game“ and "Best Game Design“ at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Games Awards 2023.

The game is often described as a roguelike. This is incorrect. Vampire Survivors is a real-time action game and not turn based. The game features of a roguelike according to the Berlin Interpretation (random map generation, permadeath, turn-based combat, grid-based movement, complexity to allow multiple solutions, non-modal - so that all actions can be performed at any time, resource management and Hack 'n' slash combat) are not all met. Therefore it is a roguelite, not a roguelike.

The game was developed and published by indie developer poncle in 2021.

THIS VAMPIRE SURVIVORS LET'S PLAY
In this Let's Play we will experience a full and complete Vampire Survivors playthrough that also functions as a tutorial and walkthrough. We will see lots of uncut gameplay and play a full Vampire Survivors campaign – meaning we will see to unravel all secrets of the game and unlock all its features. In the end of this series of game videos I will add a video with my collected thoughts of Vampire Survivors which will function as a test and review. The goal is - as always on #PlayingHardball- to see as much of the game as possible, for we are completionists.

In this Let's Play we will also check if those Awards have been given to poncle's game for the right reasons.

VAMPIRE SURVIVORS CONTROVERSY
There is a dark side to Vampire Survivors. As fun as the game is, it implements manipulative features that intentionally cause addiction. For a video game rated PEGI 12 (which therefore is played by children) this is highly problematic.
In this context you need to know that the game's developer Luca "poncle" Galante worked in the gambling industry prior to developing Vampire Survivors. He used his knowledge of how to use flashy graphics for slot machines intentionally as part of the allure for Vampire Survivors's chest-opening animations (see https://www.news.com.au/technology/ga.... The game features repetitive flashing lights and ringing noises that are indeed used in slot machines to make people addicted to play these games. Playing slot machines is regulated. One may ask, why such a regulation does not apply to games played by minors. And what it does to children's brains. Makes you also think about the integrity of BAFTA...

I have been playing video games nearly all my life, on the internet for a few years now. I enjoy a great variety of games but generally lean towards games with a unique and engaging story (like Mass Effect, Disco Elysium, The Witcher, etc), strategy/tactical games (like XCOM, Panzercorps, Total War etc), and RPGs (like Baldur's Gate, Pathfinder etc). Of course, I am always looking for great indie games too!
