Hey everyone! Mike from Guitar Tricks here, and today we're diving into the funky rock guitar style made famous by John Frusciante. We'll break down an arpeggiated riff inspired by his playing, which is super fun and gives you a great picking workout while honing your hammer-on and pull-off techniques. For a more detailed exploration of Frusciante's style, head over to https://guitartricks.com/frusciante where we cover his signature sound step by step.

Let's get started! This riff is based on triad shapes with embellishments. Triads are three-note chords. We'll begin with an E triad: seventh fret of the A string, sixth fret of the D string, and fourth fret of the G string. Start by arpeggiating the notes: A string, D string, G string, and back to the D string. Next, add a hammer-on pull-off to the G string: pick the fourth fret, hammer on to the sixth fret, then pull off back to the fourth fret. Follow this by picking the sixth fret of the D string and the fourth fret of the G string, letting it all ring out.

You can use the first three fingers for these chord shapes and hammer-ons, but feel free to use your pinky and ring finger if that's more comfortable. This riff has a Hendrix influence but adds a unique twist by arpeggiating the notes and incorporating embellishments.

After the E chord, switch to the B chord. The B triad is the seventh fret of the low E string, sixth fret of the A string, and fourth fret of the D string. The picking pattern remains the same, just on different strings. Practice transitioning between the E and B chords slowly to get it under your fingers.

Next, we'll tackle the C# minor triad: sixth fret of the D and G strings, and fifth fret of the B string. Use the same arpeggiation and hammer-on pull-off technique as before. Finally, move to an A major triad: seventh fret of the D string, sixth fret of the G string, and fifth fret of the B string. The hammer-on pull-off and arpeggiation remain consistent.

Now you have all four chords! Practice connecting them smoothly and slowly. For the full artist study, visit https://guitartricks.com/frusciante. Happy playing!
