In this video we will continue the exploration of making a 16th century Spanish man's jacket from a surviving tailor's manual of 1588 by Diego de Freyle. This jacket, contemporary with the Elizabethan period, is an early precursor to what we now wear as a sport coat. One of the most enduring features of this style of jacket is how flattering it can be on a variety of body types. When made and worn well, the head and face are featured. The high collars of the period echo many of the same features that were popularized more than 200 years later in the Regency era. The ideal of the head atop a perfectly made pillar of fine tailoring persists. The hand sewn buttonholes and completely hand sewn garment offer tutelage to the budding tailor who wants to learn about the process.
There are three very important elements of this video! First, the discussion and demonstration of basic stretching for ironwork. Second, the quick and easy hand sewn buttonhole that is demonstrated as well as a self-fitting at the end where I took video of the garment on my body and then critiqued the fit and made decisions as to what I will need to change. That does't even take into account the methods of pad stitching the canvas as well as the use of a twill tape to shape and control the center front edge.
If you have ever wanted to know more about what a tailor does to make a garment fit your body as though it were made of magic...this lesson is sure to get you thinking in the right way!
I hope you will come with me on this historical fashion journey as we continue the process to make and finish this lovely and comfortable coat.
