Ryan scored in the first minute of Maria Carrillo's pre-season game against Benicia. The game ended in a 1-1 tie.

The Benicia High School boys soccer team may not have been completely focused during the first minute on Wednesday. The Panthers, however, were focused enough for the final 79 minutes.

Despite allowing a goal in the opening minute, Benicia managed a 1-1 tie with visiting Maria Carrillo in the 2018-19 season opener at Drolette Stadium.

Panthers head coach Armando Martinez thought it took his team some time to settle in as the team has been limited in practice time due to poor air quality in recent weeks because of the Butte County fires.

“I thought in the first 10 to 15 minutes, we were kind of catching up,” Martinez said. “It’s been tough with all of the bad air quality, so we had to come out here and see what we have. We have a lot of new pieces, a lot of new players. We had 12 people graduate. It’s good to get games like this under our belt early.”

Benicia had trouble clearing out on defense and Maria Carrillo’s Ryan Dieter slipped the ball past Panthers goalkeeper Joseph Reider from about 20 yards out for the 1-0 lead.

Reider handled all of this other chances after that and Benicia’s defense was up to the task as well.

The Panthers found the equalizer in the 45th minute when the second straight corner kick from junior Will Cook resulted in a goal from senior Atom Ruiz.

“At practice Will loves taking all of those free kicks and corner kicks and he works hard at it,” Martinez said. “I really don’t have any specialists per se but he took that free kick in the first half and for him to want to take those set pieces, that’s big.”

Cook was taken down just outside of the penalty area in the 14th minute to give the Panthers their first good chance of scoring. Cook kicked the ball into the Pumas’ wall and Richardo Netro tried a rebound shot but Maria Carrillo maintained the 1-0 lead.

Dieter had a free kick opportunity at the 20-minute mark. That attempt cleared Benicia’s wall but Reider was in place for the save.

Cook had two straight corner kick chances at the 24-minute mark. His first sailed right into the penalty area but none of Benicia’s strikers could get a foot on it and the Pumas were able to clear out.

In the second half, Netro fought off a defender, made a long run but couldn’t get the ball past Pumas keeper Travis Yarbrough in the 55th minute.

In the final minutes both teams tried desperately to try to score but neither team was on target. Maybe the best chance for Benicia came with about 6 minutes left when a ball squirted loose with Benicia’s Keita Konishi and Yarbrough both sprinting toward the ball. Unfortunately for the Panthers, Yarbrough was able to smother the attempt.

Ruiz mentioned that his team was not quite as sharp as it could have been.

“We’re moving into a new section (the North Coast) and a new league (Diablo Athletic) and we’re not quite ready yet,” he said. “We still need to play with more intensity in the first half. I think we made some mistakes in the first 10 minutes, especially.”

Martinez agreed.

“In the first half, we were kind of going through the motions,” he said. “We talked to them at halftime and made some adjustments and in the second half, it was a whole different team out there, and I liked that. That second half was a lot more enjoyable for me. The first half was a little frustrating but it’s just the first game of the season so you kind of have to expect that.”
