চাঁদ পৃথিবীর একমাত্র প্রাকৃতিক উপগ্রহ এবং সৌর জগতের পঞ্চম বৃহত্তম উপগ্রহ।
পৃথিবীর কেন্দ্র থেকে চাঁদের কেন্দ্রের গড় দূরত্ব হচ্ছে ৩৮৪,৩৯৯ কিলোমিটার (প্রায় ২৩৮,৮৫৫ মাইল) যা পৃথিবীর ব্যাসের প্রায় ৩০ গুণ।
চাঁদের ব্যাস ৩,৪৭৪.২০৬ কিলোমিটার (২,১৫৯ মাইল) যা পৃথিবীর ব্যাসের এক-চতুর্থাংশের চেয়ে সামান্য বেশি। এর অর্থ দাড়াচ্ছে, চাঁদের আয়তন পৃথিবীর আয়তনের ৫০ ভাগের ১ ভাগ।
এটি প্রতি ২৭.৩২১ দিনে পৃথিবীর চারদিকে একটি পূর্ণ আবর্তন সম্পন্ন করে।
প্রতি ২৯.৫ দিন পরপর চন্দ্র কলা ফিরে আসে অর্থাৎ একই কার্যক্রম আবার ঘটে।
পৃথিবী-চাঁদ-সূর্য তন্ত্রের জ্যামিতিতে পর্যায়ক্রমিক পরিবর্তনের কারণেই চন্দ্র কলার এই পর্যানুক্রমিক আবর্তন ঘটে থাকে।
