For guitarists, the shuffle in a major blues is not just a feel. It’s also a technique. In this video, which comes from the Berklee Online course, Guitar Fundamentals, guitar instructor Kim Perlak shows you how to play a blues shuffle in open and closed formats. In open position, it’s all about playing a power chord with steady eighth notes, and putting down your 3rd finger on beats 2 and 4. For closed position, you’ll do the same thing, but alternate the notes with your pinky on beats 2 and 4. Perlak also demonstrates how techniques like the hammer-on can add flourishes to this type of rhythm guitar playing for blues.

ABOUT KIM PERLAK
With performances that are deeply personal and express a breadth of tradition, guitarist Kim Perlak has been recognized as an inspired voice in American classical music. Her performances of new classical works and collaborations with jazz and traditional players have been featured on National Public Radio, at the Yale Guitar Extravaganza, and at Boston GuitarFest. Kim is the chair of the Guitar Department at Berklee College of Music. At Berklee, her artistic work to bridge styles includes collaborations with faculty composers, and in duo playing with master improviser and slide guitarist David Tronzo. Kim is the recipient of the 2016 Berklee Chair Recording Grant.
