Bru or Reang women showcasing their tribal dance during Anthurium Festival in Mizoram.
Hozagiri, one of the famous dances of Tripura, is performed on the occasion of Laxmi Puja, held in the following full moon night of Durga Puja.
The dance is performed only by women in groups of 2, 4 or 6. Men participate in singing and playing instruments such as Sumui, Kham etc. Dancers enter with a lighted lamp balanced on a bottle on the head and carry plates with them. From the waist to the feet, the movements are in rhythmic fashion without disturbing the bottle and the lighted lamp. Movements of the upper body is restricted.
Reang or Riang are one of the 21 scheduled tribes of the Indian state of Tripura. The correct nomenclature for this ethnic group is actually Bru although the name Reang was accidentally incorporated by the Indian government during a census count. The Bru can be found mainly in the North Tripura, Dhalai and the South Tripura districts of Tripura state in India. However, they may also be found in Mizoram, Assam, Manipur and Bangladesh. They speak the Reang dialect of Kokborok language which is of Tibeto-Burmese origin and is locally referred to as Kau Bru. Like many of the tribes in the north east of India, the appearance of the Bru is mongoloid.
