Living in a Smart House! KAUST's sustainable, LEED Platinum Smart Home

Описание к видео Living in a Smart House! KAUST's sustainable, LEED Platinum Smart Home

We had the chance to move into KAUST's new Smart Home for 2 weeks! Full of smart automation features and great designs of indoor and outdoor features, the house maximizes its use of passive cooling and renewable energies. Plus, the house serves as a living laboratory for several technologies being developed by startups from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).

The KAUST Smart Home is a LEED Platinum home conceived to minimize its carbon footprint through an energy-efficient home design and integration of renewable energies. The smart house is net-zero during the day, producing the same amount of energy as it consumes.

There are 110 solar panels, and solar-driven hydro panels even extract humidity from the atmosphere and convert it into drinking water! Deep wells passively cool the house, and the house is complete with motion detectors to adjust lights and temperatures when rooms aren't occupied.

Startups with technologies included in the KAUST Smart Home:

► Darwin21: Offers a biological compound added to vegetation to make them more resilient in arid conditions

► Edama Organic Solutions: Develops organic waste recycling solutions explicitly designed for desert environments. All products assist in significantly decreasing the required amount of irrigation water to the plants.

► NOMADD: A fully autonomous water-less robotic cleaning solution

► SandX: Hydrophobic sand plays a vital role in preventing water evaporation from the roots of the local plants in the home's garden
► SaNoor: Provided optical fiber cable and sensing unit solutions used throughout the house to operate the leak detection system for the home

The house was built as a partnership between KAUST Facilities Management, KAUST Smart & KAUST Community Life.

We’re Eric and Ashley, an American couple who has spent the last 5 years living and working in Saudi Arabia. We’ve traveled a TON internationally in our time here, and we've decided to finally do some real exploring in the country we’re fortunate enough to call home for now.

As Saudi Arabia is finally opening up for tourism, we’re taking the chance to experience both the famous and off-the-beaten path the Kingdom offers. Our goal is to show you the country's uniqueness and inspire you to set out on your own adventures – whether in remote corners of the world or just down the road from your home.
