Russia has fired its hypersonic Oreshnik missile at targets in Ukraine, marking only the second operational use of the weapon since its November 2024 debut. Named after the Hazel tree, the intermediate-range missile can carry multiple warheads that separate mid-flight to hit different targets simultaneously, reaching speeds of more than Mach 10 and making interception extremely difficult. President Vladimir Putin has touted the missile as “impossible to intercept,” while Western officials have downplayed its impact, calling it experimental. The recent strike, reportedly in response to a Ukrainian drone attack on a Russian presidential residence, may be the first with full destructive intent. Based on the RS-26 Rubezh platform, the Oreshnik can carry conventional or nuclear warheads, though nuclear payloads were not used. Experts warn that its speed, maneuverability, and ability to overwhelm defenses make the missile a significant strategic concern, even without nuclear arms.
