Number lines are such a powerful mathematical tool for our child, but we want to ensure they understand them fully. Try this activity to help your child actually understand what a number line is.

In this video, we share a hands-on number line activity for kids that builds number sense and prevents common number line mistakes!

This fun math activity helps kids understand number relationships, number line spacing, and early math concepts in a way that sticks. Whether you're a parent, teacher, or homeschooler, this method makes math visual and boosts math confidence for kids.

Try this out with your child:
1. Use painters tape to make a line on your floor or wall.
2. Put down only your starting and ending number at the beginning and end of the tape line. Record the rest of the numbers on sticky notes.
3. Have your child place the rest of the numbers where they think they belong
4. Observe and ask questions, don’t correct or show. Encourage your child to think about what makes sense. One of the big things we know in math education is that we want to make sure our kids are actually doing the thinking for themselves. If we tell them where to put the numbers they don’t have to think about where they should be and miss out on a critical learning opportunity.
5. Once your child has placed all their numbers ask them: So what do you think? (even if it is not correct)

➡️ If your child SKIPS NUMBERS count along the line together
➡️ If SPACING BETWEEN NUMBERS IS UNEVEN, ask them to think about the distance between numbers
➡️ Always ask your child to EXPLAIN THEIR REASONING, even if the placement isn't correct

👉 We recommend starting with an accessible set of numbers such as 1-5, 1-10 or 1-20.

If your child easily masters those or is older you might begin to give them “incomplete” number sets to help build their proportional reasoning skills

▶️ For a 1-20 number line ask them to place: 2, 11, and 18 (watch to see that 2 is roughly the same distance from 0 that 18 is from 20)
▶️ For a 1-100 number line ask them to place: 3, 49, 76 and 99 (watch to see that 99 is closer to 100 than 3 is to 0)
