The Gendarmerie mountain squad of Haut-Rhin, France has a new search tool for missing persons: the Wolfhound. This tool allows to find a person, from a helicopter, based on the signals emitted by his mobile phone.

In recent weeks the Gendarmerie mountain squad of Haut Rhin received a search tool for missing persons: the Wolfhound. Sort of scanner, it can identify the signal of a mobile phone connected to the network.

On Saturday 31 March, the use of the new Wolfhound tracking system from the Hohrod PGM found a person who had disappeared since the previous day in the forest between Eckwersheim and Olwisheim and rescued him.

The Wolfhound Pro, whose PGM has just been equipped, allows in many cases to detect the presence of a mobile phone up to 1600m away, from the ground or from a helicopter. ...

So to learn how to use this new tool in real operation, this morning it was training with the helicopter of the Gendarmerie. On the ground, somewhere in the forest of Oberhergheim, the simulated victim , phone on, waiting for help. On board the helicopter, which covers the area by squares of 1.6 km side, the first-aid operator uses the Wolfhound, door open. This one reacts as soon as it is directed towards the telephone of the wanted person.

Since its commissioning at the PGM Hohrod this system has already proved its effectiveness : it allowed to find a missing person in the forest between Eckwersheim and Olwisheim and to help him. But the wolfhound has its limits: the victim must have a phone turned on, in a sparsely populated area.

All PGMs in France now have Wolfhound , 23 in all. It should make it possible to save money by limiting the means of research on the ground as well as additional helicopter time.
