In this video I’ll give you tips on how to choose and secure your company name.

Your company’s name can have a huge impact on how your customers perceive your business. It should therefore be unique, memorable, easy to pronounce and most importantly describe what your company does. You should take into account what impression your company name will make on your customers when the first see it.

Many of our customers register businesses using their name, such as Dlamini Trading. However this does not communicate anything to the potential customers what the business does. It is more effective to add a descriptive word such as Dlamini Landscaping to indicate what the business does. There are literally hundreds of companies which use the name Dlamini in it, so by adding a descriptive word or words to indicate which industry sector you will be operating in will separate your name from the other Dlamini businesses and greatly improve your chances of CIPC approving your name. It will also vastly improve your chances of potential customers finding you if they are looking to use a landscaping company.

Try to be as creative as possible. Have a brainstorming session, ask friends and family. Play with word associations and you could come up with a name like Lawn and Order for your landscaping business.

Some clients know instantly what company name they would like, while others struggle as they are unsure about the exact direction their business may take. So they add words such as enterprises or holdings. This is not ideal as it does not tell the customer what service or industry sector you are operating in. Again, try to be more specific in the description and if for your business takes a new direction you can always change the name to something more suitable.

Since the Consumer Protection Act was introduced “trading as” is not legal which means that company name changes have become more common.

CIPC requires four proposed names which are submitted simultaneously. Each name option is tested in order of preference so many people will use similar sounding names, however we recommend that the fourth option should be completely different from the previous 3 to minimise the chances of all the names options being rejected because if all the names are rejected there will be extra fees to submit a further set of four names. This is an unnecessary cost and will slow down the registration process and is the reason we don’t recommend one word names.

Name approval usually takes between one to three working days, assuming CIPC is not having any operational issues. Your approved company name will now be active for a window period of 6 months before you will either have to extend it or complete the company registration.

If you need to transfer the approved name a another customer account, you need to be aware that there are extra CIPC costs for both the sender and the recipient for the transfer to take place, so make sure the receiving account has the necessary funds.

Before ending off I should talk a bit about domain names which have become almost as important as the company names. Most people would like their company name and their domain name to be the same. For example. Dlaminiladacaping.co.za If this domain is already taken you can always try a different high level domain name such as Dlamininlandscaping.com or . africa

If you still don’t have any luck try a phrase relating to your business for example. If you have candle making business, try lightmyfire.co.za.
