Kolkata doctor rape-murder case: 19 arrested; High Court slams State machinery

Kolkata police has so far arrested 19 people in connection with the vandalism and violence at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Those arrested were remanded to police custody by a city court till August 22. The emergency ward, nursing station, medicine store and parts of the outpatient department of the hospital were vandalised by miscreants on Thursday. The Calcutta High Court, on hearing a petition on the vandalism, called it “an absolute failure of State machinery”. BJP supporters led by Siliguri MLA Sankar Ghosh, demanded the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Supporters of Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) clashed with police at several places in Kolkata. The SUCI had called for a 12-hour bandh.
